I'm a backyard smoker (no competitions) and the prices of fuel definately keep me from BBQing as much as I would like to. Fuel costs are a major investment. I have a Klose offset pit and go through lump charcoal like crazy. I'll have to use a a 20 lb. bag and a half for every 8 hour brisket cook and 2 to 2 and a half for every 12 hour pork butt cook. The lump I can get in Connecticut is $22.50 for a 20 lb. bag. The wood chunks I use I send away for and they are $60.00 for a 50 lb. box. With the meat cost on top of is really a pricey hobby.
