"turn to sawdust if not used quickly". What are you using? Quality pellets like Bear Mountiain, BBq'ers Delight, Cookingpellets.com, etc. will last for years. I keep several varieties on hand and have bags that have been around for a long, long time -- still intact.

Good pellets like the above, bought in bulk, can run 50 cents a pound or less. Quite reasonable cost of fuel.
