I concur about using the whole shoulder, but it does not contain the "ham". A properly cut shoulder will include some loin meat, some white meat from the butt portion, and some dark meat from the shank or picnic portion.

It also will have the skin which is a traditional part of whole hog BBQ.

The Boston Butt is the shoulder analog to the "ham" from the rear leg of the hog.
