Identity fraud is the most common crime committed in America now. Doesn't matter if you avoid buying online, never let your card out of your sight or whatever precautions you take, eventually some merchant or the bank itself will slip up and the next thing you know some summer squash is living it up on your credit.

Odds are this will happen to everyone several times in their life until the financial systems figure out a way to *really* identify people. That's harder than it sounds because most of the good solutions create an outcry from the privacy lobby.

The upside is it is so common the credit card companies now have systems in place to catch the fraud early (as you experienced), so for most it is just a minor inconvenience of having to wait a couple of days to get a new card.

Bottom line is don't get worked up over it - it's just part of life in the 21st century.
