I have a Generac emergency back-up for my house which starts and kicks in as needed during power failures. The power from it is okay for the furnace motor, fridge and lights but I turn off everything else.

If you value the delicate electronics in your controller, go with a clean power generator like a Honda or Yamaha inverter model. They are also a LOT quieter and can burn less fuel in some cases (at low load levels).
