I spoke briefly with a friend that's a first responder in one of the areas that was hit hard, this morning. In a lot of cases there may be areas that aren't ready to accept help yet. He still serves in a NG special operations unit, when he's not patrolling as a Deputy Sheriff. He's got a pretty good grasp of the situation on the ground.
If you want to help, contact the American Red Cross or a similar organization and see if you can work through them. If you are a member of a church or faith based organization they may have contacts in a local area that has a need and the resources that may be needed to support whatever you want to do.
Nobody benefits if you show up and there aren't resources available to allow you to contribute. Sometimes the biggest problem that Emergency Management agencies have is the glut of help that arrives initially.
If you really want to help, make some calls and direct the effort and energy to where it will do the most good, and at the best time.
