Good article, and a good statement of exactly the reason why judging will always be an inexact procedure. KCBS (and maybe some other sanctioning bodies) does a good job of training and reminding judges that their individual preferences aren't the point -- it's cooking to the standards. However, when it comes to taste no two judges are ever going to have exactly the same perception and personal tast HAS TO come into use.

One of the first things I learned from competition was the old adage, "Offend Nobody". Consistent winners perfect a tasty but centrally neutral approach that pleases a broad spectrum of palates. That's what keeps things interesting.
