Ron, I agree that judges and cooks should "schmooze" more and I make it a point to "make the rounds" once judging is over. However, I make it a point NOT to bother the cooks on Saturday morning because, being a sometimes cook myself, that's a bad time. When I cook I don't want to be interrupted then.

KCBS rules only prohibit "fraternizing" between judges and cooks on contest day before judging and even then it is okay to stop by and say hello. The rule isn't well understood.

Things have gotten a lot bigger -- more teams and more judges -- and a little less personal, but not for anyone who wants to make friends and talk BBQ. As long as I don't stop by at an inopportune time, I get very warm greetings from everyone I chat with in the cook area.
