Often, some boxes will be "stacked" on the turn-in tray, meaning a couple may wind up on top if the tray isn't large enough to hold six flat (many times bread trays are used).
Sauce on the lid is not a big deal and never has been. It is just as likely to be caused by jostling during transit or meat on top of garnish and very close to the top so that when somebody handles it, the top will press in a bit and pick up a dab of sauce. Happens about half the time.
Last year I judged a contest and a new judge seated at my table decided that a sauce spot on a lid was "marking". The Table Captain and the Rep got him straightened out quickly.
