This question still rears it's "PC" incorrect head once in awhile. There is nothing that stops a judge from hanging with a team the night before the contest day, or after the judging process is complete. It is only the day of the contest that judges are asked to be seperated from the teams. The "day of" means, as it was explained to me, is anytime a cook is prepping meat, working on boxes, etc. If there is competitive work going on in the pit, make yourself "scarce"!
KCBS is extremely aware of the need for objectivity in the judging process. You are asked to use common sense in the application of this rule.
