I use a gas assist smoker and it works great. I see no mention of you using any wood for added smoke. If you're not using some type of wood/chips you are not BBQing or smoking, just grilling or baking. Purists will argue you can't bbq or smoke with gas assist but in reality many do and do it well, but.....you must use some wood or chips thru a good part of the cook or the flavor will not be there. If you are maybe you need more. Just charcoal will be way better than just gas. And some wood with the charcoal will be even better than just charcoal. Hope this helps.
