There is a KCBS policy against this. Don't remember where it is written (or unwritten), but a few years back I asked this question directly because my team wanted to compete in an event I was organizing. The response was that as long as I had nothing to do with the team beyond the usual contact as organizer it was permitted, but the team would be disqualified if I was involved with the cooking.

As others have stated there is way too much for an organizer to do during an event so it really wasn't any problem staying away - frankly I don't think it would be possible to do even an adequate job at either role if you tried to do both at once.
