I did the same thing years ago and was very satisfied. I used one of those expandable grates available at Home Depot. I took the left over part and use it to support a water pan that I placed just inside the opening to the cooking chamber. If your smoker has the exhause stack that extends a couple of inched down into the cooking chamber, you can use a vegetable can to extend it down to the cooking grate level. These modification seemed to help the performance of the cooker.
