The time depends on what the chicken is in. You are the only one that can control that. Salad dressing type marinade is about 6 hours. A salt brine is something you have to learn. A soak provided by a packager is usually what is printed on the label. (they figured that part out, usually pretty close)
If you have a recipe for a brine that is really tripping your trigger to use, then go with it and see what happens. Practice before you serve to a big group or in a comp. You and the judges might not like the results.
