How exactly does this inexpensive contest "cheapen" anything other than the cost of entry? The judges are still CBJs, and the contest run by KCBS Reps. If the small local teams that might enter such events are as inferior as you imply, surely the big boys that cook 30+ events a year aren't concerned that the locals would beat them? And if one did, wouldn't that simply reflect the skill of an unknown team that has more talent than funding?

I believe you are dead wrong on this. If you choose only to cook events where you can make a profit that's up to you, but devaluing the achievement of cooks who succeed at such a contest is just plain poor sportsmanship.
