The cost to put on a KCBS sanctioned competition and provide the cooks with a comfortable venue (grass, water, electric, etc.) works out to about $85 per team in the 35 to 45 teams range.

You would need to add what ever amount you want to pay out in prize money divided by the number of teams you expect to host to come up with the total per team entry fee.

There are more cooks than not that are happy to participate in this type of event.(See poll results above) Most would rather have an event to participate in then sit at home. The density of events in your area though I would expect to effect this. Pick a period where there is a hole in the schedule.

Sanctioning gets you legitimacy and the certified judges that the teams would also rather see.

The teams are your customer, if you give them everything else they are looking for and take very good care of their needs, the money isn't everything.

Not being dependent on finding sponsors and raising funds will give you a better chance to sustain your contest over time.
