I was in a similar situation about a year ago. I was holding on to $2,100 in bad checks from a contest. I played the nice guy for six months and got nothing but empty promises in return. Finally, I sent a letter of demand informing the organizer that unless the amount was paid in full within 30 days I would file a small claims actio and include treble charges, this intitles yo to three times the face value of the check, with court costs to be added. Ended up having to go to court but won a $3,600 settlement, which they paid. I was lucky, collecting on such awards is not always easy. Yo need to ask yourself if it is worth your time and moeny to pursue this in court. I would exhaust your other resourse first as in contacting the president of the organization, the Board of directors if tye are a non profit, etc. Also consider going public on any paper, tv, news show that has one of those sections for helping consumers that have been taken advantage of. Good luck. BTW, when I get checks with my team name on it I write "for deposit only" on the back and run them throough my ATM. Never a problem doing it this way.
