From my understanding the Dodge trucks dump diesel to burn off the particulate and can use a few gallons doing so. I did a bunch of forum reading before I bought my 2011 Ford and the Dodges were definitely lagging in the fuel economy department. It's also my understanding that the next generation Cummins will use urea also but I'm not 100% sure on that.
From my research the Fords and GMs get similar fuel economy and ultimately I made my decision based on pricing and incentives vs the options I wanted. When my truck was a week old I drove from Wichita to New Orleans and back with no towing and averaged 18.1 mpg for the trip. Towing I'm seeing an average of 11 mpg but I'm known to cruise down the road pretty good.
