I have had two large backyard smokers, one made by David Klose and one made by Roger Kerce (Pig Pounda Kappa). Both had expanded metal cooking grids. But, both were framed and had a cross bar in the middle. I believe that there are different grades and weights of expanded metal.
Also, if it is free and it last a year, that seems to be a pretty good deal.
