Cliff, I'm getting to this thread a bit late, but I didn't see where you indicated what kind of salt you used. If it was table salt, I'm not surprised it was waaaaayyyyy too salty. Kosher salt is what's intended when a recipe calls for equal parts salt and sugar. Also, the recipe that you thought you remembered as calling for equal part salt and sugar...could it have been in a recipe for a brine, rather than a recipe for a rub? Food for thought.
