You are correct as to what you heard about salt/sugar ratio.
This was suggested as a starting point in a basic rub at a cooking class conducted by a champion pit master. Salt or a combination of seasoned salt, garlic salt, onion salt, etc. to make an equal ratio of salts to sugar was suggested. As you have discovered, that's too much salt. My suggestion to you is to experiment with the salt sugar ratio stating with half the salt. Taste your rub before using, and adjust as necessary.
