How liberal should I be with my Rub?

I was also uncertain if I applied too much rub. Is that possible? I was under the impression that you could not apply too much rub. So I rubbed the meat down, then stuck it in the fridge over night. Then applied the rub again before putting it on the grill. Do you guys think this was the reason for the saltiness?
