I think the only reason there are problems getting judges to fill out comment cards is because their use was made optional in the first place. I believe that was a huge mistake. I have long held that comment cards should be mandatory for any score of 5 or lower with the logic being that cooks are entitled to know why their entry is considered to be below average and a judge should be able to articulate their reasoning. This was proposed and the overwhelming pushback was that judges would not score anything lower than a 6 so as to avoid having to write a comment card.
If that opinion is accurate, (and I don't believe that it is), it would mean that we have a lot of poor judges in our system (and I don't believe that to be true either). Simply put, it would be more work and no one wants to do it.
I say, require comment cards for 5s and below, give the judges a chance to make it work and then deal with whatever problems come from the change. Instead, it seems the easier path of just scuttling the program is what will likely happen.
