You are correct. You need to remove the single stage regulator on the grill. Residential gas grills are designed to operate on low pressure (9-11 inches water column). The second stage regulator is already reducing the pressure from the first stage reg to low pressure. The only way he needs the reg that came on his grill is if the line going to the grill taps in to the high pressure line before it gets to the second stage reg. The reg that came on the grill is designed to take tank pressure from a small cylinder (20 lb etc) and reduce it to low pressure. Hope this helps.
