Most BBQ rubs include the following:

Salt, pepper, garlic, paprika and sugar.

You can create quite a few variations from these simple ingredients by varying quantities, pepper and sugar types.

Plenty of things you can add from there. If you want to minimize the amount of food you waste learning by trial and error, I'd recommend a good book for rub recipes to get you started. One respected one that includes guidance for smoking with a gas grill is Richard McPeake's "Art of Smokeology".
