There is a perception that some judges don't take their duties as seriously as the cooks take their job of getting from arrival to turn-in. I don't believe it is widespread. But I have no doubt there are maybe a handful at every contest that are there to eat. If hanging out with a team at a comp and learning what it takes to get to a point where that judge gets to taste some of the best barbecue in the world helps even a handful of judges take their job more seriously, then it's the right thing to do. I cook and I welcome the opportunity to judge once or twice a year. I think it helps by giving some insight into what I need to be doing. Why on earth would the opposite not be beneficial?
