1st. Gathering of BBQ Forum people 1999 American Royal BBQ contest

It's all not over yet by a long shot. The American Royal is a several day event and has draw 500 teams from all over. I was there today for the 14 straight time and it never ceases to amaze me. It has always been a contest that The BBQ Forum has strong ties with. When I first started the BBQ Forum the first place I went to promote the Forum was the American Royal. I took off early from work and went there with a bunch of cards I had printed to promote the BBQ Forum and passed them out to the contestants. Most of them thought I was crazy because a lot of them didn't know anything about the Internet. Thinking back I most have looked like a joke to them. Since I had gone there straight from the insurance office I was wearing a suit and tie and an overcoat because it was cold that day. Needless to say I was way overdressed for the occasion. To be honest with you I had no idea what a barbecue contest was at that time.

Then for several years after that the Royal was the place where the people that visited the BBQ Forum got together to see what each other looked like. At first a few of us just gathered together at the flag pole. Then each year it seemed that annual meeting kept getting bigger and bigger until I stopped it a few years ago. It was getting so big I thought it was becoming a burden and expense on the people that hosted it each year.

So the American Royal has always been a part of my fondest memories about the BBQ Forum. Below you will find a link to this years American Royal schedule. If you have never been there be sure to mark it on you list of things you must do in your life.
