I didn't comment when you asked this on your earlier post and I don't compete in bbq contests but have competed in other things. Here's my angle.
A race you pay to run in gets payed down only so many places, you have to cross the finish line within those spots, not if they can see you coming.
Fishing, they usually have a megaphone/speaker counting down the time out loud. You must be in the designated weigh in area by a certain time, not because they see your boat coming up to the dock. You did not catch the biggest because it was 'almost' in the net.
Pool, you don't win if your ball ALMOST goes in.
Golf, if you ringed the cup it doesn't count.
Most sports now are measured to the 100th of a second or less, if you're a fraction less you don't get it because you were almost there.
Everyone wants BBQ to be a recognized sport/event it has to go by the rules of other sports.
Yes it would HUGELY suuck to miss by a few seconds, but the line has to be precise, not almost, to be fair to all contestants. Just from my chair, my opinion.
