As a judge for the past 5 years, I don't even want to tally how much money I've spent traveling to contests to judge. Butcher Boy said it very well. Yes, there are and will be "bbq snobs" at most every contest. They are very easy to spot and most of the judges know them and try not to sit at their table. Sometimes, I am even somewhat rude to them and ask them "why do you even come to judge?".
I have had the blessed opportunity to help out a very successful cooking team a few weeks ago. I knew fully well the time and money that they put in before I got there. But I learned a great deal from them and now can count them as my friends. Hopefully I was able to help them also.
I guess I have a better idea. Instead of constantly complaining about the judges, how about asking a few judges to come help you out over the course of a few contests. I'm sure that it could be a mutual benefit.
