I was honored to judge the American Royal Invitational this year and yes, to a slight degree, there was "sameness". However, these competitors are all GC's and some similarity is to be expected. In the Open I observed the usual variety.

I think it is just as tough as it ever was to produce great, balanced flavors. Way too many entries still have too much sauce or have been over-smoked and are, thus, one-dimensional. Outstanding entries with a beautiful balance of meat flavor, spicing, smoking and saucing plus perfect texture and artistic appearance are still rare and are wonderful to behold!
