I've only used Kingsford briquettes, but lots of WSM owners use lump. Gary Wiviott, author of Low and Slow, recommends only using lump. Suppose to burn hotter, cleaner, and no chemicals.
Some folks purchase a additional charcoal grate and lay it cross-ways of the other one to keep some of the smaller pieces of lump from falling through and blocking the bottom vents.
I got my WSM 18.5 last July and have only cooked on it 7 or 8 times with the briquettes. No problems so I don't really see a need to change, but I may give lump a try sometime in the future.
