Santa Maria rub is great, so is kosher salt and pepper...

Tri tip benefits from the sear of direct cooking. also, it's a cut with no real connective tissue to break down.

That said, in volume I've cooked them in my smoker many times. I run it around 300* and cook to the same internal temps. Very good, but not as good as grilled IMHO...
