Like you said, there's too mny variations to really choose. I don't think you can go wrong, no matter which way you go.
For crispy bacon, I have been known to pre-cook the bacon in the oven or microwave 'til it's still limp and then wrap. It'll crisp up about the time the meatballs are "done".
Not that it will change my answer, but frozen or home-made meatballs? If homemade, beef or beef and pork mixed?
