Dry rub and marinade

Hi, I've just recently been getting into barbeque and I am wondering how dry rub and marinade go together when preparing chicken. do you rub the dry rub over the chicken first and then add a marinade sauce and leave it in the fridge over night. or do you use the dry rub after the chicken has been properly marinated.
