I'm from the "start with a 5-6 and go up from there" generation. That's what was repeatedly said in every class I've been around. Then you read the rules, listen to the CD and that's not what they say. So, as a newbie to judging who do you listen to? The Rep standing there telling your class and or judges meeting over and over "start at 5-6" or some faceless toneless CD?
Now in the Reps defense, it's not like they usually just pop out with the "5-6" thing, it's usually in response to a question from the floor and prefaced with "this is what I do".
What has and does pop up from Reps and others is the idea of up-scoring for "hard work and costs" that the teams put in and that "you shouldn't score below a 5 because of that as it's an insult". That instruction really needs to change.
Peresonally I used common sense and figured A. those lower numbers were not put there just to be place holders or just for show. B. At every event you can run into some really "off" tasting meat that deserves the lower numbers. C. The written rules and CD don't jibe with what I'm being told that's expected from me.
But that's just one judges opinion I guess.
