If you're only gonna smoke once a year (and it's only for you and your family), then an 'ECB' ('acronym for 'El Cheapo Brinkmann') would be fine. FYI and ECB is basically the same as the Charbroil Gourmet Water Smoker, both of which can sometimes be found on craigslist (usually listed as 'smoker' or 'grill') for anywhere between 'free' and $40.
Make sure anything you get has two pans, a book-sized aluminum door, a domed cover and at least one rack.

Not a smoker I would want to cook with every day as it does have some issues, but for a once a year cook, can't do any better for the money and...

That little ECB cooks well enough that for many of us here on the forum, the ECB was a 'gateway drug' that led further to an addiction to smoked food.
