I had to try it. I used Rancher and placed two briquetts back to back around and one on top of them. Also, I mixed in some wood just for Dylan;)

I place a thermometer in the lid vent , lit the coals . Vents wide open it took about a hour to get to 250 .

I started at 1pm Sunday and it was still at temp at 9pm (when I went to bed) with a little less than half the maze left.

I cooked some thighs during the process and they were fine. No doubt ,using this method, you could cook a brisket or butt.

The only problem I can see with this method would be cold weather.
