I don't have the WSM, but a ProQ Excel which is similar, 20" diameter.
I do something similar to this, though I use the foil ball method instead of the clay planter base. This has the same bottom layer of 2 sheets of foil that stays in for many cooks. The top layer I change out after each cook.
