bbq with wood

I need to bbq on a budget, eg I can't buy gas or charcoal, I have a "fuel" area of about 2 feet by 4 feet.

How would I go about just using wood from my backyard to grill on? Do I grill when it's still flaring up or when it "coaling" ?

Is there another way to do this? Also what's the best method?
