Yep - I tried it when I lived in an apartment complex years ago that wouldn't allow charcoal or even a gas flame on the decks and patios (not sure why that's a difficult concept to grasp). The WSM never got hot enough, but I was using a really cheap hot plate. I think Brown had a better hot plate, and his terra cotta planter was probably better insulated, too. But if you have the hot plate already, I'd sure give it a try.
