There is a young man in our church who has been interested in doing bbq since about the time he started high school. It started the day his mom got a catalog from work that they could order from as a work bonus. He pointed to the ECB and said they should buy that for his dad. Well, his dad never cooked on it so the son started. As time went by he would ask me about bbq and I would try to give him my wisdom from my very shallow pool of knowledge. Despite my mentoring he kept cooking, eventually buying a small offset. After he had bought it he talked to me about it and I gave him some suggestions on how he could get the most out of it. He is now going into his second year of college.
A couple of weeks ago he told me he was cooking for a big party his dad was having and I offered to loan him my 22" WSM to give him more capacity. He took me up on the offer and this past weekend they did the cook for the party. He dropped the WSM back at my house. I asked him how it went and he was blown away by how well the WSM had cooked hand held temp. In fact they were so blown away that Sunday his dad handed him the credit card and they ordered one and it had arrived yesterday. Good to see young people so enthusiastic about carrying on the tradition.
