I was also judging at this contest and heard the same thing. The contest reps we had were good folks and took the time to call KCBS to get clarification.

KCBS needs to really talk with judges before they make decisions affecting them. Possibly they feel comfortable in their actions at times given the judging numbers at in the 55,000 plus range (at least on the badges) and we have far too many folks wanting to judge in many cases. I understand that at $35 a head it is tough to turn away the annuity that each new judge brings but attention needs to be paid on the quality of judges.

When I table captain I clearly see the impact of newer and in many cases unprepared judges. Possibly the focus of KCBS needs to be on improving the quality of judges rather than treating those of us who have been around for 50+ contests like children who must be told to be discrete. Those of us who have been around for a while understand how hard the cooks work and feel they deserve the best quality judges available.KCBS should encourage judges to get to know the teams and the work they do rather than feeling they have to scold us.

A lot can be done to improve the quality of judges and that needs to be the focus.... Just my 2 cents...
