Welcome to the world of KCBS competition! I think you did well for your first show -- congratulations.

Style and taste "trends" develop (and change slowly) over time. The current trend in chicken is a box with six, shiny red clones in it. "Muffin Tin" seems to be on the wane although we still see it frequently.

You didn't mention your prior experience but one way to get a great overview and understand what is hot and what's not is to judge, also. Classes are held frequently and are inexpensive. There are a lot of folks who do both. If you haven't judged it is almost impossible to understand why scores can differ significantly for the same entry.

Another, albeit more expensive, suggestion is to take one of the cooking schools put on by one of the top teams. They are fun and get you up to speed on all the current trends and methods very quickly.
