In my opinion, it doesn't. I've known teams that have hit the circuit and top tenned or even GCed out of the gate. Others (like me) have to work much, much harder at it. The one thing that competing frequently helps is scheduling and procedures. You get faster building boxes, you learn your cooker better, you tweek cooking seasonings and methods. The more you do something, the more familiar it becomes. Good advice is to cook frequently when you're hot. More good advice is don't quit when you're not. Make small changes in seasonings or methods unless you're really bombing in a category. Oh, and there are always exceptions to all "good" advice!
