I competed in the Winnipeg contest this year. We drove up from Minnesota, skipping the contest in Marshall to cook here. Of course I wasn't on the phone with Ponderosa and the organizers so I don't know what happened there. But I want to say a few things about my experience:
This was a fantastic contest that I plan on doing again and again. There were thousands of people on site, may of whom strolled by our set up with a friendly word or a joke about our giant American flags. The BBQ contest was an equal or smaller partner to the big blues festival, which gave us and the visitors a reason to be there beyond the competition.
Perry Hopkins is one of the nicer people in BBQ. He has gone to great lengths to encourage American teams to compete, including driving down to the Minnesota BBQ annual banquet to recruit. The "Snatch and Grab" comment just doesn't sound like Perry to me.
I did this contest two years ago and I warms me to say that so many of the nice people I met the first time came up and said hello. I suppose that is true throughout the bbq world, though.
I figure this contest will be in competition with the Marshall contest again, and I don't want to discourage anyway from competing in Minnesota, but I highly recommend this contest to anyone that is thinking about it next year.
