We had the privilege(well paid the entry) to be a part of the first contest on Washington Island, Wi and never have enjoyed so much hospitality from all involved in 9yrs of cooking bbq contests--from the ferry captain thanking us for coming to the island--every bartender, waiter/waitress, store clerk, farmer, motel owner, etc seemed genuinely happy to see the contest happen on there island! Large crowds that loved the idea that our leftovers could be purchased filled the grounds(four months ago the ground were woods and then the brush hog appeared!).
From the fish boil for supper with fresh fish to trays of homemade doughnuts for breakfast the volunteers rocked!! Electric(up to 50amp) and water was easily accessible, free showers provided too just down the road.
Downside was not alot of prize money involved but the entry was only 175bucks and the ferry ride was included--all judges were certified but lots were brand knew
Also you have the opportunity to have a shot bitters at the nelsens Bar--worth the experience for sure!
Sorry for being so long winded but really have never felt so welcome/appreciated anywhere before on our bbq journeys(Hammond is close)and otherwise am not affiliated with this event!
