OK, take those 25 nationally known competitors and add 42 more teams of varying renoun and expertise. That'd be a typical weekend in Kansas City. Do you honestly think a GC won over 66 teams, including a murderer's row of champions, is the same as beating 19 teams with a few champions? And we've been doing this since '94 - we've watched lots of teams come out of left field to win - but it's pretty freakin' rare at a 100-, 75-, or even 50-team contest. Especially if those 50 teams are competing in one of the big BBQ locations. There are a dozen exceptional teams within ten miles of my house (one two doors down). Every contest in the KC Metro has a line-up of great teams. Sorry if that sounds "elitist," but this is what we do here. You don't have to go looking for great teams to compete.
And please note that I don't speak for the Royal or the KCBS. Of course the KCBS doesn't have different classes of GC, but I'll bet most people in the home office know the difference between the competition of 180+ teams in Lenexa and a 20-team contest in the middle of nowhere that same weekend. And I seriously doubt the Royal was motivated by money. They're simply out of room. Someone has to get bumped, and I don't blame the Royal one bit for choosing the winners of the more prestigious contests.
