mike, They grow at the base of older or burned or rotted oak trees. They are considered "prized edible" in the mushroom books. You can just pull them off but the best way is to cut them near the base and leave some of the base to regrow next year. I got 4 quart freezer bags off of that one. Soak to get the bugs and leaves out, clean, cut, blanch in salted water, shock in ice water and freeze if you aren't eating imediately. Just sautee in butter and enjoy one of the best mushroom out there.
