It would help to know how the tie was broken. Taste scores from the 5 scoring judges are compared, then tenderness, then appearance and finally the 6th low scoring judge is brought in. If there is still a tie then a coin toss is used.

I agree that in the event of a coin toss being the deciding factor it would make sense to split the purse because it is a true tie. If the tie was broken by one of the other criteria then I'm not so sure.
