Thank you, this theory makes sense but more like the updraft was pulling the oxygen up and around better than the sides were bringing it through. Intersting, I wonder how this applies to pit designs because it seems like you always close the side air and leave the smoke stack open to reduce the temp as your first choice. Maybe because the flue size is larger in a fireplace? M.A.
